Every unit in Starfleet (whether a starship, station, or planetary facility) has a command structure. As part of this structure, each member of the crew is assigned a position in a department within one of the three divisions of Starfleet - Command, Operations, and Science. This category includes descriptions of all departments found aboard most vessels and bases. Individual position descriptions are found in each department's article.

Note: Commanding officers have a wide degree of latitude when it comes to determining the structure of their unit, meaning these positions can vary to meet the specific needs of a particular ship or base.
